Sat 7th March - Cyclone? What cyclone?!

After a good breakfast and a wee mooch about the rest of the Ayres Rock resort, we get picked up at 12 noon to get the flight down to Cairns. Bye Bye Dusty Land of Nothingness (apart from The Rock!) and Hello Party Town in Cairns!! The flight is a tad bumpy coming into land and as I look out of the window, you have to notice how green it all is!! Surrounded by rainforests – it’s such a contrast to the dry outback of Ayres Rock!
While we’re waiting for our luggage, we get a voicemail from Trent saying to be careful as there is a cyclone heading past Cairns…..oh great!! No wonder the landing was bumpy!! We head outside and its humid central….back to being hot n sticky and having 5 showers a day then – haha…..however, the weather doesn’t look too bad and no buildings have fallen over so I think we’re ok!!!
The hostel is called Calypso Backpackers and is very funky. There’s a pool with a nice poolside bar and food area, pool table and big screens. The reception guys are dead helpful and we check out our rooms. Aaron is a dorm with 3 other beds and Dave n I have a double room with a shared shower. Aircon and fan = great success!! It’s definitely needed here!!
Everyone gets unpacked and its time to run down for the happy hour…..whooohooo – for a whole hour the vino is about a £1 – yay!!! The lads are on jugs of beer, again, muchos cheapness and we end up chatting to a cockney guy called Stuart. He shows us this mental website – http://www.askjud.com/ and ends up freaking us out with it!! Its like a mind-reading website with a twist – anyhoo, we all have a right laugh and decide to get the free bus into the town centre – sorry, City Centre (aye right!). The hostel gives us out some free passes to this place called The Woolshed. It’s a right cheesy, dancey place full of backpackers dancing on tables and general messyness! Yay – we came to the right place for my 2nd birthday! Haha!
Aaron ends up playing a few rounds of pool on the pool table and becomes acquainted with the Turkish mafia…..well, that’s what they looked like. It was hilarious to watch as they were all sooo damn competitive and Aaron just kept beating them!! They even used one of their girlfriends to play – she was wearing a very revealing dress and, I personally think, was used to distract the opposition!!! After Aaron beat the last guy, they all stormed off in a huff – hahahaha – what a hoot!! Dave n I spent the rest of the night talking to randoms - some crazy Irish lass called Vivien, some other dude from Sheffield with a weird Ozzie accent and some locals – then we discovered Aaron had gone AWOL – (he had a few too many sherries).
We ended up leaving when the place closed at 4am – another night where we’ve beaten Aaron the lightweight!!! Dave insisted on pizza for his early morning munchies and we managed to find a taxi and head back to the hostel with no dramas! Bed at silly oclock but it was a Great Nite!
