Fri 27th March - Roxburgh's version of the Royal Variety Show....

The body is starting to get used to all this exercise and I’m slowly coming to grips with the hard graft! Work was quite good today, I changed lanes and it was nice and chilled. The machine also decided to breakdown at various points during the day – haha!!
After work, we get showered and ready to go see the local Variety Show……organised by Pat. Oh my days, this should be fun. Aaron decides to opt out of this gathering, so Dave, Tom and I head to the local cinema where the event is being held. When we rock up the rest of the apple packers are there along with what looks like the whole of Roxburgh. It’s a proper community affair! John from The Commercial has even scrubbed up and is wearing a suit, bless him! Meanwhile, Pat is up at the back of the auditorium organising all the participants! It totally reminds me of a school assembly / play – very random indeed. It’s a bit laughable when the local kids all come up 1 by 1 and play a few pieces on the piano….I mean, come on there’s about 110 of them! Tom even butts in half way through a kid playing and starts applauding – it’s only cos the child stumbled and paused halfway through (how cruel!). There’s even a child and the local pharmacist that get up and perform…..the bagpipes!! Seriously, I kid you not! Oh well, just reminded me of being back on Princes Street!
It got better (aye right) when this dude got up and told us a bit about his extended travels to Vanuatu – part of the Cooke Islands I think…..anyhoo, you could soo tell he was in ‘visiting schools’ mode and was a tad on the ol’ patronising side when telling his tales. He even started harping on about religion and how the people in Vanuatu lived in communities that hated each other, but they learnt in time to get along and blah blah blah, community spirit versus religion schizz…..it was all a bit full on for a ‘Variety Show’. However, Dave managed to find the whole thing hilarious and was biting his hand to stop him from bursting out laughing. We ended up leaving at the interval, mainly as it was 10pm and way past our bedtime!
