Wed 20th May - Universal Studios - whoohoo!!

Well, getting blown to bits in the back of the van yesterday didn’t do me any favours as I’ve woken up with the cold – grrr…best not be swine flue….I had the worst night’s sleep as was really paranoid about it!!
Anyways, we all get up and head for Universal Studios – I’m sooooo excited! It’s fairly easy on the metro, just taking 10minutes. It’s a scorcher of a day and we have to wait for the wee Universal Studios train to take us up into the park. Hayley and I are sat beside this ‘larger than life’ woman at the bus stop and she starts chatting to us about our accents. She then asks us what we think of LA and Hayley says ‘well, it’s so different compared to home. Everything is sooooooooooo much bigger!’ Well, the woman then answers ‘what like the people?’ and I start to squirm!! After a few ‘errs…well, there is a lot of fast food around here and healthy stuff is so expensive!’ from both of us, the woman then starts to say ‘no it’s true. We are all much bigger over here and it’s because we are such busy people. I mean, we rush to work everyday and so we have to grab fast food, it’s the only option. Yeah, we are all such busy people’. What!?!?! Are you serious!? Do you think that people in our capital cities at home aren’t busy people, with busy lives and stressful jobs!? Do you think we all live in castles in the countryside, chillaxing and eating berries?!?!? Well, that’s what I was thinking….luckily, the train/bus thing arrived and we got on and she wished us a happy time in LA. What a muppet!
We take our pics by the famous Universal Studios Globe and on the red carpet and then head into the park. First up is the House of Horrors! Vanstone and I are such wimps that we latch onto Dave and Aaron whilst walking through the House of Horrors. There are loads of cobwebs everywhere and the occasional random mummy jumping out of you, which sends us shrieking! We’re both such wimps and are glad to get out into the sunshine afterwards haha! High blood pressure now – not good!
Then it was off do the actual studio tour. Along the way, Hales and I managed to get our picture taken with Frankenstein, while the boys got pics taken in the mouth of Jaws….true story! It was a bit of wait for the tour, very reminiscent of queuing at Alton Towers and growling at all the posh peeps that had bought the queue jump ticket – grrrr! But it was worth the wait as we got to see some really funky stuff on the tour: The Desperate Housewives set, a scene from War of the Worlds set – the one where there’s a massive plane crash – it was HUGE!! We also go underground and see a subway set, with a massive lorry coming crashing towards us!! So much fun!! The tour takes 45 minutes and we all enjoyed lots! But we wanted action, so off to get on The Simpson’s Ride – whooohoo!!
WHEY HEY!!!! Such a funny ride!! You sit in a cart thing, which holds 8 of you, but there were only 5 of us in there – us and this wee laddy behind us! You then get taken on a cartoon rollercoaster! It’s weird but sooooo effective – you actually think you’re on a proper rollercoaster and then flying through the air in Springfield! So funny!
We then did the Jurassic Park ride, which is a bit of log flume ride and we all get drenched! Then off to the Mummy ride which was a bit disappointing – too short! What was eventful though was watching some huge monster of a bloke get turned away from the ride…poor bloke! But if he had read the signs whilst queuing, it states ‘Our seats may not accommodate every patron here. Please try the tester seat before getting to the front of the queue’ and so he didn’t and then gets knocked back after trying to squeeze into a seat. How embarrassing!!
There were a load of special effects type ‘rides’ / ‘experiences’ which we all went to – not as exciting as the rides but still fun. The Backdraft one showed us crazy fire effects, the Terminator one was really tired looking and needed updating but the Shrek 4D was a right hoot! You watch a mini movie of Shrek and have to wear these geeky green 4D glasses and sit in this movie theatre – god, I sound so American! Then during the showing, you get sprayed on when Donkey sneezes and there are rats running around your feet (you get air pumped around your feet!). Very impressive!
We end the day with a showing of Waterworld which is this amazing spectacle of people on jet skis, explosions and mean pirates jet soaking you – yup, we got drenched cos I looked at him!! Argh – not good for the cold!! Thank god it’s roasting as we get dried fairly quickly.
Unfortunately, the park closed at 6pm but we did most of the ‘rides’ and we’re all very knackered! We head home and get all packed for our trip to VEGAS tomorrow!!
Hayley
