Wed 13th May - Steaming pools of mud

After a decent nights’ kip, we’re up and away after 10am. The hostel owner has given us some tips on where to see the geo thermal stuff, mud pools and other crazy things on our way to Okahune….which, by the way, is pronounced very differently (Oh-hunay) – now you know!
The mud pools are sooooooo mental!! We stop off at quite a few today and they are amazing! The stench is still rife but you are mesmerized at these bubbly, steaming pools of mud. Crazy stuff.
It’s a long drive after all the geo thermal stuff, as we’re just driving through complete wilderness. It reminds me of driving up north back home! However, we did see the beautiful Lake Taupo and even did some prawn fishing….yup, fishing for prawns?! How very weird! But it was fairly cheap and killed some time – Aaron and Dave were in their competitive element wanting to beat each other! Dave got the first one and then I got a whopper! YAY!!! Aaron had to stay for hours longer so he could get some and not feel embarrassed – bless him!
We eventually get to Okahune and it’s just like an alpine ski resort. Once you enter the village/town, you drive past a HUGE carrot statue….i kid you not…..apparently, this place is THE carrot capital of the world or some schizz like that…..would I lie about this stuff?!
The hostel is nice, with a small group of people there. They’re all up for getting steaming – must not be much to do around here! So we all settle down to watch Defiance and have some vino. After that, the boys go to bed and I start to surf the net for stuff to do in the States……guess what I found?! Free showings of America’s Got Talent – oh yes!!!!! With The Hoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan. We’re off to see that on Monday – what a hoot!!
