So, today was a lovely depressing day…well, I certainly learnt a lot about history during our sightseeing trip. Pierre, our personal tuk tuk driver, picked us up after breakfast at 10am. Still cant get over the driving of these folk over here – it never ceases to amaze me and I don’t even know if they have to pass a driving test – crazy shenanigans all around!!!
We drive out for about 40 mins –yup, in this dusty smelly tuk tuk – out to this random army base where Aaron wants to fire guns!! I half think about it but it is a waste of money really, if you think about it…however, boys will be boys and Aaron wants to fire an AK 47 – listen to this……..he gets offered if he wants to shoot a chicken…..yup! A real live chicken!? How awful!!! Luckily, he declines and gets on with shooting in this wee kinda long shed place….he doesn’t hit the target – which is a bit mental – so Dave assumes he’s been firing blanks! Off we trot to the Killing fields…..
Man alive, I had no idea about the history of what happened here – Pol Pott and his crazy mentalist ideals of having no educated people or anyone with jobs….basically, he rounded up everyone who had an education, religious, working and wanted them to become peasants and work in the fields. He wanted a classless society – however, he was a crazy messed up dictator and killed a ¼ of the population in Cambodia – absolutely sickening. At the killing fields, its pretty eerie and quiet with a few tourists walking around. There is a memorial building in which lies over 8000 skulls!!!! It is really shocking to see and I get pretty emotional. Especially when reading all about the torture that went on.
We continue to walk around and there are these 2 wee boys behind a fence, yapping away in English and telling us what the sign says – I think its cute and they even say ‘photo please!’ so I do as they say……….silly me………they then say ‘ok, money please!’ and show me their sad begging faces – wee bams!!! They totally scammed me and cos I felt sorry for them I gave them a dollar –then wanted a dollar each but I told them to share – off they went! What a doofus I am! Obviously, Dave and Aaron walk off saying ‘silly bint! Couldn’t you see what was gonna happen?!’ –argh shut it! Its 75p!!!
Once we walk around, we get our driver to go to S21 – the place where they imprisoned all the prisoners of war. It used to be a school and then Pol Pott ordered for it to be changed into cells and places of torture. Its really harrowing, especially as there are mugshots of all the people that suffered there. We get to go into their cells and see what it wouldve been like – its really shocking that I had no idea about the atrocities that happened in this country. We walk around S21, which is museum / memorial place for about 2hrs. After this harrowing experience of a day, we head for some lunch before Pierre takes us back.
What a day….i end up having a wee snooze and we head for dinner around 8ish. We go for a walk to find a different area of the city and end up walking for blimming ages and rock up to this seafood chinese restaurant – haha – I have never been into such a posh chinese before with sooooooo many staff to wait on us! Turns out fairly expensive – for where we are – so we wont be going there again! Play around on internet for a bit and head for a few drinks in this nice sports type bar. End up talking to this bloke who was only from…….Dumfries!!! but he lives in london now – haha – small world. He was sat with some drunken russian woman – who had the biggest boobs I’ve ever seen!! Seriously, they were massive and they weren’t fake which is probably worse as they were down to her knees….shocking but true! Anyhoo, we head back to hostel for about 12.
